(一) Bobby Smithson

Appleyard Lees

Bobby Smithson works closely with in-house patent departments of large companies both in the UK and overseas.
Bobby manages a diverse range of international patent portfolios. He assists their owners to identify new inventions, assess their patentability and draft and file resulting patent applications. Bobby also has handled many high-profile oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office, possessing the specialist knowledge and unique skills required to win favourable outcomes for our clients, whether opposing or defending a patent.
Bobby has particular experience in polymers, coatings and healthcare apparatuses. His practice includes patent work related to product inventions, novel polymers, compositions comprising existing polymers, and new operating processes. He has also drafted and successfully prosecuted patents for various complex mechanical inventions including engines and gearboxes.

(二) Carin Burchell

Taiwan Working Group Lead

Carin is a UK Chartered Trade Mark Attorney with  a certificate from the Intellectual Property Regulation Board as a Higher Courts Litigator in England and Wales.  She is also qualified as an Irish Registered Trade Mark Attorney to
practise before the Intellectual Property Office of Ireland and is a Registered Professional Representative before the EU IPO in Alicante.
After Carin took her LLB at Queen Mary, University of London, she trained to become a trade mark attorney with two well established firms in London and passed the qualifying exams in 1985. She then went to Hong Kong where she worked with a leading law firm as a trade mark attorney handling some of the earliest trade mark registrations under the then new filing system of the PRC. After three years, she returned to the UK and became a director of the trade mark legal arm of a well-known brand agency. Carin went on to help set up the trade mark registration practice at a large firm of Leeds based solicitors before establishing the practice which later became BRANDED! in 1995.

(三) Darren Smyth

EIP

Darren Smyth is a UK and European Patent Attorney, and is the head of EIP’s chemistry practice group EIP Elements. He is known as an authoritative commentator on IP issues, having been a regular contributor to the IPKat weblog and
the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice among others. In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, Darren regularly advises on portfolio management issues, validity and freedom to operate opinions, acquisition of IP, and purchaser and vendor due diligence. He is also experienced in contentious work, including oppositions and appeals at the European patent office, and litigation in the UK and other European jurisdictions. Darren also has a substantial practice in registered designs.
Darren has a masters degree in chemistry and DPhil in synthetic organic chemistry from the University of Oxford, and worked in Japan for two years at the Tokyo Institute of Technology before entering the patent profession. Darren speaks Japanese and Spanish, and is conversant with French, German and Russian.

(四) Rupert Knights

Forresters

Rupert specialises in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in Europe, the UK and around the world. Rupert has particular expertise in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, including representing clients in ex partes and inter partes oral proceedings.
With an engineering background, Rupert works in the mechanical, electrical and software arts, with specific experience in the fields of personal hygiene, medical devices, oil and gas exploration and drilling, military equipment, scaffolding and formwork, and consumer electronics.
From working closely with a number of direct clients, Rupert has gained a clear understanding of the importance of providing practical, business focussed advice.
Following graduation, Rupert spent three years as a Patent Examiner at the UK Patent Office before taking a role as a trainee patent attorney in 2005 at another firm of patent and trade mark attorneys.  Rupert spent a number of years as a partner at that firm before joining Forresters in 2020. He is  an active member of the Intellectual Property Section of the American Bar Association.  I am presently on the Magazine and CLE Boards and chair of the International Action Group.
Outside the office, he is kept busy by an exuberant young family. As a keen skier, Rupert takes  any opportunity he can to hit the piste.
